How your tax rate is built in 2026
An employee's tax rate in Finland consists of several parts. Mandatory employee contributions are taken from the gross salary first: the employee pension contribution (TyEL) of 7.30 % and the unemployment insurance contribution of 0.89 %. On top of these come the health insurance daily allowance contribution of 0.88 %, when annual income is at least €17,255, and the medical care contribution of 1.10 %. The largest actual taxes are the municipal tax — on average 7.57 % in 2026, 5.30 % in Helsinki — and the progressive state income tax, whose marginal rate starts at 12.64 % and rises to 37.50 % for annual income above €52,100. Church members also pay church tax.
Automatic deductions lower the rate, such as the €750 deduction for work-related expenses and the earned income tax credit, which in 2026 is at most €3,430. The calculator takes all of these into account and tells you which withholding rate corresponds to your gross salary. For a euro-by-euro breakdown of the taxes and contributions, see the net salary calculator.
When and how to update the tax card in MyTax (OmaVero)
New tax cards take effect in January, and the Tax Administration calculates their rate from earlier income data. If your income has changed — a pay rise, a new job, a layoff or new side income — the old rate may no longer match reality. In that case it pays to update the tax card right away, so that the withholding hits the right level and you avoid back taxes or an unnecessarily large withholding in the spring.
The easiest way to order a new tax card is the MyTax (OmaVero) service at vero.fi. You need an estimate of your gross income for the whole year, plus the salaries already paid and the tax already withheld — you can find these on your payslip. The new card is usually transferred electronically straight to your employer. You can use this calculator's estimate as a starting point when deciding which rate to put on the card.
Basic rate and additional rate explained
A Finnish tax card has two percentages. The basic rate is applied to income up to the income ceiling stated on the card — the employer withholds tax from every salary according to it. The additional rate is higher, and it is used only for the part of your income that exceeds the ceiling. This keeps the taxation at the right level even if you earn more during the year than estimated.
In practice the additional rate corresponds to your marginal tax rate: how many percent of every extra euro goes to taxes and contributions. This calculator estimates the additional rate by computing the taxes on a monthly salary €100 higher and comparing the difference to your current one. If your income repeatedly exceeds the ceiling, it is worth updating the whole tax card in MyTax — then the basic rate also settles at the right level and a large part of your salary is not taxed at the higher additional rate.
