When to use each case
Title Case is the US standard for headlines, book titles, and email subject lines. This tool follows the AP-style pattern most American publications use: the first and last word are always capitalized, and short words like a, an, the, of, in, on, at, to and for stay lowercase in the middle of the title. Chicago style differs mainly in how it treats longer prepositions, so check your style guide for edge cases. Sentence case — capital letter only at the start of each sentence — is what Google tends to show in search results and what most modern web headlines use.
UPPERCASE is for acronyms, legal disclaimers and emphasis (sparingly — it reads as shouting). snake_case and kebab-case are developer conventions for variable names, file names and URL slugs. aLtErNaTiNg cAsE is the sarcasm-meme format, and inverse case rescues text typed with Caps Lock accidentally on.
Keyboard tip: in Microsoft Word you can cycle a selection between lowercase, UPPERCASE and Capitalized with Shift + F3 — but it does not know AP title-case rules, which is exactly what this converter handles for you.
