Simple average = sum of values divided by count. In a weighted average each value has its own weight (e.g. course credits).

This average calculator gives you the mean, the weighted average and the median of a set of numbers from a single input. It suits grades, measurements and financial figures whenever you want to condense a group into one summary value.

How the calculator works and what it’s for

Mean, weighted average and median

The ordinary mean is found by adding the numbers together and dividing by how many there are. In a weighted average each number is given a weight, so the more important values influence the result more.

The median is the middle number once the values are sorted by size. It describes a group's typical value when a few unusual numbers would skew the plain mean.

When to choose the median

If a set contains a few very large or very small numbers, the mean can give a misleading picture. In that case the median better reflects the typical level.

With salaries, for instance, a small group of top earners pulls the mean upward, but the median wage describes more accurately what most people actually receive.

Where it is used

A weighted average is useful for course grades when different exams carry different weight, and in investing when working out an average price.

Always check that the numbers are entered in the right unit and that the weights match their real importance, so the result stays comparable.
