How is GPA calculated?

Each letter grade converts to grade points (A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0 and so on down to F = 0). Multiply each course’s points by its credit hours, add everything up, and divide by total credit hours. A 3-credit A and a 4-credit B gives (4.0×3 + 3.0×4) ÷ 7 = 3.43.

What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?

Unweighted GPA uses the plain 4.0 scale regardless of course difficulty. Weighted GPA adds bonus points for harder classes — typically +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP or IB courses, making the maximum 5.0. High schools often report both; colleges usually recalculate applicants’ GPAs with their own method.

The US national average high school GPA is around 3.0. A GPA of 3.5–3.7 or higher keeps most college doors open, while highly selective universities typically expect 3.9+ unweighted along with a demanding course load. For college students, 3.0 is a common cutoff for internships and 3.5+ for honors (cum laude) distinctions.

Does an A+ count as more than 4.0?

Usually not — most schools cap A+ at 4.0, which is what this calculator uses. A minority of institutions count A+ as 4.3. If yours does, your official GPA will be slightly higher than the number shown here.

How do credit hours affect GPA?

Credit hours are the weights: a grade in a 5-credit course moves your GPA five times as much as the same grade in a 1-credit course. This is why a bad grade in a high-credit core course hurts more than one in a small elective — and why retaking high-credit courses is the fastest way to raise a GPA where retakes replace the old grade.
