The flooring calculator tells you how many packs of parquet or laminate you need for a room. Enter the floor area, the coverage of a single pack and a waste allowance, and you get the number of packs to buy, rounded up.
How the calculator works and what it’s for▾
How the calculator works
The tool first adds your waste allowance to the floor area, then divides the result by the coverage of one pack. The figure is always rounded up to whole packs, since you cannot buy half a box.
For a 20 m² room where one pack covers 2.5 m² and waste is 5%, you need roughly 21 m² of material, which works out to nine packs.
What you enter and what you get
You provide the room area in square metres, the coverage of one pack in square metres and the waste allowance as a percentage. The pack coverage is usually printed on the box or the product sheet.
The result shows the area including waste plus the number of packs required, ready to drop onto your shopping list.
How much waste to allow
The installation pattern drives how much you waste. A straight, row-by-row layout typically wastes about 5%, while a diagonal layout pushes waste to roughly 10–15% because of the extra board cuts.
For small or irregular rooms, add a little extra, as offcuts always pile up around edges and thresholds.
Installation tips
It is safer to buy one spare pack than to run short: boards from the same batch match in tone, and the leftovers cover future repairs. Check that every pack belongs to the same production batch.
Let the boards acclimatise to room temperature for a couple of days before laying them, so the material does not move after installation.
