The deck screw calculator estimates how many screws and how many packs you need to build a deck or floor. The calculation is based on the area, the screw density per square metre and the pack size.
How the calculator works and what it’s for▾
How the screw count is calculated
The calculator multiplies the area by the screws per square metre to get the total number of screws needed. It then divides that total by the pack size and rounds up to whole packs.
On a deck you typically fix two screws at every crossing of a board and a joist, which works out to roughly 20–28 screws per square metre depending on board width and joist spacing.

You enter the deck or floor area in square metres, the estimated screws per square metre and the size of one screw pack in pieces.
The result shows the total number of screws and the number of packs required, so you know exactly how much to pick up at the store.
Choosing the right density
Screw density depends on board width and joist spacing. Narrower boards and tighter joist spacing raise the count, because there are more fixing points.
If you do not know the exact density, start from the 20–28 screws/m² range and refine it for your own frame structure.
Buying tips
Choose weather-resistant screws made for outdoor use on a deck, and keep a few spares for ones that break or go in crooked.
Pre-drilling hardwood reduces splitting and snapped screws, which also lowers your actual waste.
