The cloud storage calculator turns abstract gigabytes into a concrete number of files. Enter your available space and the average size of one file, and it tells you roughly how many photos, songs or videos will fit.

How the calculator works and what it’s for

How the calculation works

The tool first converts your storage from gigabytes to megabytes, then divides that figure by the average size of a single file. In short, total space in megabytes divided by the file size gives the number of files that fit.

For example, 100 GB equals about 100,000 MB. If a typical photo is around 4 MB, that space holds roughly 25,000 images.

What you enter and what you get

You provide two values: the storage space in gigabytes and the average file size in megabytes. The result shows how many files fit, plus the same space expressed in megabytes.

The accuracy depends on the file size you choose. As rough guides, a photo is about 4 MB, a song about 5 MB and one minute of HD video around 100 MB.

Who it helps

Use it when deciding whether a free storage tier is enough or whether a paid plan is worth it. It is equally handy when buying phone memory or an external drive and you want to picture what you can actually keep on it.

Good to know

The result is an estimate, because real file sizes vary widely with compression, resolution and format. The operating system and apps also reserve part of the capacity, so the true free space is usually a little smaller than advertised.
