This coffee calculator gives you the perfect ratio of ground coffee to water for a few cups or a whole pot. It works for drip coffee, the French press and the AeroPress, so you get a consistently good cup every time.

How the calculator works and what it’s for

How the ratio is calculated

The calculator starts from a solid baseline of about 60 g of coffee per litre of water, which is a ratio of roughly 1:17. From there it scales the amount to the number of cups and the strength you want.

One heaped tablespoon of ground coffee is about 7 g, which helps you measure without a scale.

What you enter and what you get

Enter the number of cups, the cup size in millilitres and the strength you prefer. The calculator shows the total water, the coffee in grams, the number of tablespoons and the final water-to-coffee ratio.

This lets you measure the right amount whether you're brewing a single cup or a full pot.

Adjust to your taste

A 1:17 ratio is a good starting point, but adjust it to your own taste: less water gives a stronger cup and more water a milder one. Grind size and brewing method also affect the flavour.

Fresh, just-ground coffee and the right water temperature noticeably improve the result.

Who it's for

The tool is useful both for your morning brew and when serving guests, when you want a consistent result and the right ratio without guesswork. Different brewing methods call for slightly different ratios — use the calculator as a base and fine-tune.
