This unit converter changes values between different units such as temperature, length, weight, speed, area and volume. It is a versatile helper for everyday life, study and work whenever you need to move from the metric system to imperial units or back.

How the calculator works and what it’s for

How the unit converter works

The converter relies on fixed conversion factors between units. Length, for example, is converted by multiplying or dividing by the right factor, and the same principle applies to weight, speed, area and volume.

Temperature is a special case, because Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin do not convert with a simple factor but with a formula that also accounts for the different zero points of the scales.

Which units you can convert

You can convert temperature between Celsius, Fahrenheit and Kelvin, and length from millimetres up to miles. Weight converts across grams, kilograms, pounds and ounces.

You can also convert speed, for instance from kilometres per hour to miles per hour, and work out areas and volumes in different units.

Where the converter helps

The unit converter is handy for travel, scaling recipes, sports, study and technical calculations where the source and target units differ.

It saves time and reduces mistakes when you have to interpret foreign measurements or report results in units from another system.

Tips and common mistakes

Always check that you are converting from the right order of magnitude, for example cm from cm rather than from m. A small slip in the power of ten can easily make the result wrong.

Remember too that area and volume grow quickly: converting a metre to centimetres is a direct factor, but for a square metre or cubic metre that factor is raised to the second or third power.
