How the calculator works and what it’s for

How the converter works

The calculator divides your target number of servings by the original number to get a scaling factor. For example, going from a recipe for four to one for six gives a factor of 1.5.

When you multiply each ingredient by this factor, the amounts stay in the same proportion to one another.

What you enter and what you get

Enter the recipe's servings, the number of servings you want and the amount of one ingredient in grams or millilitres. The calculator shows the scaling factor and the new amount of that ingredient.

You can apply the same factor to every other ingredient, so converting a whole recipe is quick.

What not to scale directly

Spices, leavening agents and salt should not always be multiplied straight by the factor — taste as you go. A small recipe can take proportionally more seasoning than a large one.

Cooking time does not change linearly either; a bigger batch may need longer, but not in the same proportion as the quantity grows.

When to use it

The converter is handy when you cook for a different sized group than the recipe assumes, batch-cook for later or halve a portion. Round the results to sensible measurements to make work in the kitchen easier.
