This oven temperature converter switches the baking temperature between fan and conventional heat, and between Celsius and Fahrenheit. That way you get the recipe temperature right no matter which oven you have.

How the calculator works and what it’s for

How the conversion works

A fan oven spreads heat more efficiently than top-and-bottom heat, so the same result is reached at a temperature about 20 °C lower. The converter makes this reduction for you.

The calculator also shows the same temperature in Fahrenheit and as a gas mark, so you can follow recipes from abroad too.

What you enter and what you get

Enter the temperature for conventional (top-and-bottom) heat in degrees Celsius. The calculator shows the matching conventional temperature, the fan temperature, the Fahrenheit value and the gas mark.

With a single input you get every conversion you need for different oven types and units.

Check what the recipe assumes

Most recipes give the temperature for conventional heat, so in a fan oven you should lower it. If the recipe is already written for a fan oven, don't subtract again.

When in doubt, watch the food and trust colour and doneness rather than the clock alone.

Baking tips

Always preheat the oven before baking so the temperature is steady from the start. An oven's own thermostat can be a few degrees off, so an oven thermometer helps with precise baking.
