The grout calculator estimates how many kilograms of tile grout you need to fill the joints between your tiles. The result is based on tile dimensions, joint width and the area being tiled, giving you a solid basis for buying material.
How the calculator works and what it’s for▾
How grout consumption is calculated
Consumption depends on how much joint volume the tiles leave per square metre. The smaller the tile and the wider the joint, the more grout you use, because there are more joints and they are larger.
The calculator works out the joint volume from tile length, width and thickness together with joint width, then converts it to kilograms using grout density. The result appears both per square metre and as a total.
What you enter and what you get
You enter the tiled area in square metres, the tile length, width and thickness in millimetres, and finally the joint width. These dimensions are listed on the tile packaging.
The result shows grout consumption per square metre as well as the total amount in kilograms needed for the whole job.
Density and accuracy
The calculation assumes a grout density of about 1.6 kg/L, a typical figure for many cement-based grouts. Density does vary from one product to another, however.
Always check the manufacturer's own coverage table before buying, as it gives a more precise figure for that specific product.
Grouting tips
Allow a little extra so the grout lasts the whole job from a single batch and the colour stays consistent. Mix only as much as you can work before it sets.
Large tiles with narrow joints use far less grout than small mosaic tiles, so it pays to calculate for your exact tile type.
