The skirting board calculator tells you how many skirting boards and how many running metres you need around a room. Enter the room dimensions, the total door width and the length of one board, and you get the number of boards to buy.

How the calculation works
The calculator first works out the room perimeter using 2 × (length + width), then subtracts the total door width, since door openings get no skirting.
A 5% allowance is added to the running metres for cuts and mitred joints. The result is then divided by the board length and rounded up to whole boards.
What you enter and what you get
You enter the room length and width in metres, the combined door width and the length of one board on sale. Measure door openings at skirting height.
The result shows the perimeter, the running metres including waste and the number of boards you need to buy.

The calculator helps renovators and builders size skirting accurately before the trip to the store. It suits both a single-room refresh and a material estimate for a new build.
The same logic works for ceiling cornices and other edge trims, as long as you enter the correct perimeter.
Measuring tips
Always measure from the finished floor and remember to subtract every door and walkway opening. If the room has alcoves or bays, add their edges to the perimeter.
Buy one spare board, since cutting mitred corners rarely comes out perfectly without a little waste on the first try.
