How chronological age is calculated
The standard method is calendar subtraction with borrowing, exactly like column arithmetic: subtract the birth date from the test date column by column — days first, then months, then years. When the days come out negative, borrow one month and add the length of the month preceding the test date; when the months come out negative, borrow one year.
In clinical shorthand the age is written with semicolons — 7;3 means 7 years, 3 months — and most test manuals instruct you never to round days up to the next month. The calculator also gives the age as total months, total weeks, and total days, which some infant assessments and research protocols use directly.
