Long division breaks a big division into a repeating four-beat rhythm: divide, multiply, subtract, bring down. Take 123 ÷ 7. Seven does not go into 1, so look at 12: it goes in 1 time (1 × 7 = 7, and 12 − 7 = 5). Bring down the 3 to make 53: seven goes in 7 times (7 × 7 = 49, and 53 − 49 = 4).
