This streaming data calculator estimates how much mobile data video streaming uses, based on your watch time and the chosen quality. It helps you stay within your data plan and avoid surprise overage charges.

How the calculator works and what it’s for

How usage is estimated

The calculator multiplies the watch time in hours by the per-hour data usage of the chosen quality. Roughly, HD video uses about 3 gigabytes per hour and 4K about 7 gigabytes per hour.

Two hours of HD video, for example, uses around 6 gigabytes. The calculator shows both the total usage and the usage per hour.

What you enter and what you get

You enter the watch time in hours and pick the video quality. In return you get the estimated total data usage in gigabytes and the usage per hour.

That lets you see at a glance whether your data plan covers the viewing you have in mind, or whether a lower quality is the smarter choice.

Who benefits from it

It suits anyone who watches video on a mobile connection: travellers, people on limited data plans and families sharing one monthly allowance.

It also helps you decide when it is worth waiting for wifi before watching data-heavy video.

Good to know about accuracy

Estimates vary by service and device, and many apps adjust quality to the connection automatically. Treat the figure as a guide.

Music streaming uses only a fraction of video data, so audio-only listening does not eat into your plan at the same rate.
