Bandwidth Converter
Convert connection speed between bits (Mbps) and bytes (MB/s). Understand what your speed means.
12.50 MB/s
Download speed
| Megabytes per second | 12.50 MB/s |
| Gigabytes per minute | 0.75 GB/min |
| Gigabytes per hour | 45.0 GB/h |
This bandwidth converter switches a connection speed between bits and bytes, that is from megabits per second to megabytes. It helps you understand what your advertised internet speed really means as a download rate.
How the calculator works and what it’s for▾
How the conversion works
Providers quote speed in bits (Mbps), but files are measured in bytes. Because one byte is eight bits, you divide the bit rate by eight to get the byte rate.
A 100 Mbps connection, for instance, downloads at most about 12.5 megabytes per second. The calculator also shows how much that is in gigabytes per minute and per hour.
What you enter and what you get
You enter the connection speed in megabits per second. You get the same speed in megabytes per second, gigabytes per minute and gigabytes per hour.
The per-minute and per-hour figures help you picture how much data the connection moves over a longer stretch.
Who it is for
It suits anyone who wants to understand their plan's real performance or compare the speeds of different internet packages.
It also helps you judge how quickly a large file, game or film will transfer over your current connection.
Good to know
The difference between bits and bytes explains why a 100 Mbps connection does not download 100 megabytes per second but about an eighth of that. This is a common source of confusion.
Real-world speed usually falls a little short of the theoretical figure because of network load and the server.
