A CAGR calculator turns the total return of an investment into a comparable annual average — the compound annual growth rate. It tells you the steady yearly percentage your investment would have needed to grow from its starting value to its ending value.
How the calculator works and what it’s for▾
What CAGR is and how it is calculated
The compound annual growth rate is found with the formula (end value / start value) raised to the power of 1/years, minus one. The result is shown as a percentage.
For instance, €10,000 grows to €16,000 over five years. The total return is 60%, but the CAGR is about 9.9% per year, because returns compound on top of one another.
Why CAGR is useful
CAGR smooths uneven years into one figure, making it easy to compare investments of different sizes and time spans on equal terms.
A total return can look large, but if it built up over many years the annual rate is more modest. CAGR reveals the real pace of growth.
What you enter and what you get
You enter the start value, the end value and the holding period in years. The calculator returns the CAGR, the total return as a percentage and the value increase in euros.
This shows you both the relative return and the concrete gain in money at the same time.
Good to know
CAGR assumes steady growth, even though the value may have swung widely along the way. It describes an average, not the return of individual years.
The calculator ignores taxes, fees and any contributions made in between. Use the result as a comparison aid, not a precise forecast.
