What is an expense calculator used for?
An expense calculator is the quickest way to get a clear picture of your spending. Many people are surprised by how large small monthly costs become over a year: a 15 euro subscription is 180 euros per year, and a 300 euro rise in food spending adds up to 3,600 euros. The calculator is useful when planning a move, applying for a mortgage or going through a life change, and you want to know what your life actually costs. It is deliberately a light tool: you type your expenses on rows and see the totals immediately. If you want to plan your finances in more detail by category, try the more comprehensive budget calculator, and for splitting your income into needs, wants and savings, use the 50/30/20 budget calculator.
Fixed vs. variable expenses
It helps to think of expenses in two groups. Fixed expenses are roughly the same every month: rent or maintenance charge, loan payments, insurance, phone and internet plans, and streaming and other subscriptions. These are easy to list in the calculator as they are. Variable expenses change from month to month: food, transport, clothing, hobbies and leisure. You get a good estimate for them by looking at your bank statements for the last couple of months and taking the average. Less frequent costs, such as yearly insurance premiums or vehicle tax, can be divided by twelve and added as their own row. This way the monthly total reflects your real cost of living rather than a single month.
Tips for cutting expenses
The biggest savings are usually found in large fixed costs: housing, transport and contracts. Compare offers for electricity, insurance and internet at least once a year — an hour of work can save hundreds of euros. Go through your subscriptions and cancel the ones you do not really use; you can also rotate streaming services one month at a time. For food, a shopping list, store brands and reducing food waste make a clear difference. Once you have trimmed your costs, update the numbers in the calculator and see how much the yearly total dropped — a concrete euro amount is a great motivator.
