How the calculator works and what it’s for

How the 50/30/20 rule works

The rule directs 50% of net income to needs, 30% to wants, and 20% to savings and extra debt repayment.

On 2,000 € of net income, for example, that leaves 1,000 € for needs, 600 € for wants, and 400 € for savings. The calculator makes this split for you in one click.

What you enter and what you get

You enter only your monthly net income, that is, your take-home pay.

You get three amounts in euros: needs (50%), wants (30%), and savings and debt (20%), forming a clear budget framework.

What belongs in each category

Needs cover essentials such as housing, food, and bills. Wants include leisure, hobbies, and other optional spending.

The final 20% goes to savings, investments, and any extra payments on top of your regular debt repayment.

Tips and interpretation

50/30/20 is a guideline, not an iron rule. In high-cost-of-living areas, needs may take more than half, so the other shares have to flex.

Use the budget as a starting point and track your actual spending to see how well your habits match the target split.
