The barbell plate calculator tells you how much plate weight to load on each side of the bar to reach your target total. It saves mental math at the gym and ensures an even load on both sides.
How the calculator works and what it’s for▾
How the calculator works
It subtracts the bar weight from your target and splits the rest across two sides, using per side = (target − bar) / 2. That keeps the bar balanced.
For example, a 100 kg target with a 20 kg bar means 80 kg of plates, or 40 kg on each side.
What you enter and what you get
Enter your target total weight and the weight of the bar you are using. The result gives the total plate weight and the amount of plate to load per side.
That way you see at a glance how many kilograms go on each end.
Who it is for
It serves strength trainees, bodybuilders and powerlifters who change the load between sets. It is especially handy in progressive training where weights change often.
For beginners it clarifies the logic of loading a barbell.
Good to know
A standard bar usually weighs 20 kg and a women's bar 15 kg, but always check your own bar. The plate sizes you have on hand also limit which combinations you can load.
Remember to secure the plates with collars for safety.
