The rowing split calculator turns the distance and time of a row into a standard 500 m split, the pace measure rowers use most. It also shows your average speed in kilometres per hour, making your effort easy to compare.

How the calculator works and what it’s for

What a 500 m split is

The split tells you how long it would take to row 500 metres at your current pace. It is found by dividing total time by the number of 500 m segments in the distance: split = time / (distance / 500).

For instance, 2000 metres in eight minutes gives a split of 2:00 per 500 metres. The lower the number, the faster the pace.

What you enter and what you get

Enter the distance you rowed in metres and the time it took in minutes.

The calculator returns your 500 m split along with your speed in kilometres per hour, giving you the same effort expressed two ways.

Who finds it useful

The split is the common language among rowers in gyms and races, so the calculator helps you compare pieces against others and against your own targets.

It is handy for planning intervals: set a target split and check whether you hold it across the whole distance.

Good to know

The split reflects your average pace over the whole distance, so a strong finish or a slow start will not show up in a single figure.

Different machines and resistance settings can feel unlike each other, but the split makes results comparable regardless of how the row felt.
