The car CO₂ emissions calculator estimates the yearly carbon dioxide emissions of your driving from annual mileage, fuel consumption and fuel type. It shows emissions per year, grams per kilometre and the fuel used over a year.

How the calculator works and what it’s for

How emissions are calculated

The calculator first works out the yearly fuel amount by multiplying mileage by consumption. That number of litres is then multiplied by the fuel's emission factor.

The factors used are 2.31 kg CO₂ per litre for petrol and 2.68 kg CO₂ per litre for diesel, arising from combustion.

What you enter and what you get

Enter your annual mileage, your average consumption in litres per hundred kilometres and the fuel type.

You receive your yearly CO₂ emissions in kilograms, emissions in grams per kilometre and the litres of fuel used over a year.

Who finds it useful

The calculator suits drivers who want to understand the climate impact of their driving and compare the emissions of different cars or driving habits.

It helps you gauge how much cutting your mileage or lowering consumption would reduce your annual emissions.

Good to know

The figure reflects the direct emissions from burning fuel and does not include the emissions from producing or distributing that fuel.

Real emissions vary with driving style, weather and load, so treat the result as a guiding estimate.
