This travel time calculator tells you how long a trip takes once you know the distance and the average speed. It works for driving, cycling and walking and helps you plan your departure time correctly.

How the calculator works and what it’s for

How travel time is calculated

Time is the distance divided by the average speed. A 120 km trip at an average of 80 km/h, for example, takes 1.5 hours, or 90 minutes.

The calculator shows the result both in hours and in minutes, so you get the time in whichever form you need.

What you enter and what you get

You provide the distance in kilometres and the average speed in km/h. In return you get the travel time in hours and separately in minutes.

The average speed here is the mean over the whole trip, not the top speed, so pick a realistic figure for your mode of travel.

What it is used for

It helps you estimate an arrival time, plan when to leave for a meeting or a train, and compare the duration of different routes or modes of transport.

It is just as useful for cyclists and walkers who want to know how much time to set aside.

Tips for a realistic estimate

Remember the time assumes a steady average speed. For longer trips add breaks, fuel stops and rush-hour slowdowns so the estimate matches reality.

In city driving, traffic lights and junctions noticeably lower the average speed, so choose a modest figure in built-up areas.
