This download time calculator estimates how long a file will take to download once you know the file size and your connection speed. It helps you judge whether a big game, film or backup will finish in time.

How the calculator works and what it’s for

How download time is calculated

Download time is the file size in megabytes multiplied by eight, divided by the connection speed in megabits per second. The factor of eight comes from the fact that one byte is eight bits.

A 1000 MB file on a 100 Mbps connection, for example, downloads in theory in about 80 seconds. The calculator shows the time in seconds and in minutes.

What you enter and what you get

You provide the file size in megabytes and the connection speed in megabits per second, the way speeds are usually advertised. You get the download time in both seconds and minutes.

If the file is given in gigabytes, convert it to megabytes first by multiplying by a thousand.
