Charades rules
The actor may not speak, hum, mouth words, or point at real objects in the room — everything must be mimed. Their team guesses freely and out loud; the actor can nod for “yes”, shake for “no”, and beckon when a guess is close. A point goes to the team for every word guessed before the timer ends, then the other team takes a turn.
The standard opening gestures make everything faster: crank an invisible film reel for a movie, hold up fingers for the number of words, then tap syllables on your forearm and act one syllable at a time. Tug your earlobe for “sounds like” and pinch your fingers for a small word like “the” or “of”.
Party-size tips
- 4–6 players: two small teams, 60-second rounds, everyone acts every other round. Fast and loud.
- 7–12 players: the classic setup — two teams, 90-second rounds, rotate actors so nobody performs twice before everyone has gone once.
- Big groups (12+): make three or four teams and have them guess in rotation, or run it tournament-style with the score keeper tracking the top two teams per round.
- Mixed ages: let kids pick from animals and actions while adults draw from hard — same game, level playing field.
