How the calculator works and what it’s for▾
How average speed is calculated
Average speed is the distance travelled divided by the time taken. To get the result in kilometres per hour, the time is converted to hours by dividing the minutes by sixty.
For example, 10 kilometres in 50 minutes means 50 divided by 60, or about 0.83 hours, giving an average speed of roughly 12 kilometres per hour.
What you enter and what you get
You enter the distance in kilometres and the time in minutes. The calculator shows the average speed in both kilometres per hour and metres per second.
Metres per second is a convenient unit for physics problems, while kilometres per hour is the most familiar one in traffic and sport.
What it is used for
The calculator helps runners and cyclists monitor their pace, travellers estimate how long a drive will take, and anyone who wants to compare their performances over time.
Good to know
The result is an average over the whole trip, so it does not reveal momentary changes in speed or stops. If you paused along the way, those breaks are included and the average comes out lower than your actual moving pace.
