How do I calculate the discounted price?

Multiply the price by (1 − discount/100). For example, €100 −25% = 100 × 0.75 = €75. The saving is €25. The calculator shows both the discounted price and the saving.

How do I calculate the discount percentage?

Divide the saving by the original price and multiply by a hundred. For example, if a €100 product now costs €75, the discount is (100−75)/100 × 100 = 25%.

Are two consecutive discounts the same as their sum?

No. −20% and then −10% is not −30%. After the first the price is €80, and the second discount is calculated from that: 80 × 0.90 = €72, i.e. −28% in total.

Which price is the discount calculated from?

A discount should be based on the previous selling price. Consumer protection requires that the stated reference price is a genuine previous price, not one artificially inflated.

How the discount is calculated

The saving is the original price multiplied by the discount percentage, and the sale price is the original price minus that saving.

For example, a 25 percent discount on an 80 euro item means a 20 euro saving, so you pay 60 euros.

What you enter and what you get

You enter the original price in euros and the discount percentage. The result shows the original price, the saving in euros and the final discounted price.

This makes it easy to check the promise on a sale tag in a couple of seconds.

Several discounts in a row

Two discounts applied one after another do not reduce the price as much as their combined percentage suggests. For example, 20 percent followed by 10 percent is not the same as 30 percent but less.

This is because the second discount is calculated from the already reduced price.
