Garden Soil Calculator
Calculate how much garden soil you need (m³ and 40 L bags) from bed area and layer depth.
1.50 m³
Soil needed
| Volume | 1.50 m³ |
| In litres | 1,500 l |
| Bags | 38 pcs |
This garden soil calculator estimates how much soil a planting bed needs. Enter the area and the desired layer depth to get the soil requirement in cubic metres, litres and bags.
How the calculator works and what it’s for▾
How the calculator works
The tool multiplies the bed area by the layer depth to find the soil volume. The volume is converted to litres and divided by the bag size to give the number of bags needed.
For example, a 10 m² bed with a 10 cm layer needs 1 m³, that is 1000 litres of soil, which equals 25 bags of 40 litres.
Inputs and results
The fields are the area in square metres, the layer depth in centimetres and the bag size in litres. The result gives you the volume in cubic metres, the amount in litres and the number of bags.
You can set the bag size to match your own product, so the bag count reflects exactly what you plan to buy.
Who it is for and when
It is useful for garden and yard projects, such as starting a vegetable patch or a flower bed or raising a lawn base. It lets you order enough in one go.
Good to know
One cubic metre is 1000 litres. Soil settles and compacts after planting, so add a little extra to keep the surface from ending up too low.
