Rising rates can catch a homeowner off guard if the monthly payment was based only on today's low interest. This interest rate stress test shows how much your payment climbs if the rate rises to a level you choose, so you can stress-test your finances in advance.
How the calculator works and what it’s for▾
How the stress test works
The calculator works out the annuity payment at both your current rate and a higher stress rate, using the same loan amount and term. The difference is how much your payment would rise.
For example, on a 200,000 € loan over 25 years the payment is clearly higher at 6% than at 2%, and the calculator shows that gap directly in euros.
What you enter and what you get
You enter the loan amount, the loan term in years, your current rate, and the stress rate you want to test your repayment ability against.
You get the monthly payment at the current rate, the payment at the stress rate, and the monthly increase between them, making your buffer need concrete.
Who it is for
An interest rate stress test suits mortgage applicants, current borrowers, and anyone who wants to prepare for rising rates before they happen.
It also helps judge whether your budget can take a larger loan or whether you should reconsider the loan size or term.
Good to know
Banks often stress-test loans at a 6% rate. Make sure the payment fits your budget at that higher level too.
Remember that a variable-rate loan moves with its reference rate, so the actual payment can vary over the life of the loan.
