How the calculator works and what it’s for▾
How the distance is calculated
Distance is the number of steps multiplied by the length of one step. With stride length in centimetres, the result is converted into metres and kilometres.
The longer your stride, the further the same number of steps takes you.
What you enter and what you get
Enter your step count and your own stride length in centimetres. If you don't know your stride, you can estimate it by measuring a few steps or from your height.
The results show the distance in kilometres and, more precisely, in metres, so even short distances stand out clearly.
Estimating stride length
Stride length is typically about 0.40 to 0.45 times your height. As a rough average it is around 67 cm for women and 76 cm for men.
A personal measurement is most accurate: walk ten steps, for example, measure the distance and divide by the number of steps.
What to use it for
It suits you when you want to turn a pedometer reading into distance or plan the length of a walk. It helps you grasp how far the day's steps actually go.
The result is an estimate, since stride length varies with pace, fatigue and terrain.
