The safe sun time calculator estimates how long you can stay in the sun before burning, based on your skin type and the SPF of the sunscreen you use. You get the protection time in both minutes and hours.

How the calculator works and what it’s for

How protection time is calculated

The tool multiplies your unprotected burn time by the sunscreen's SPF. If your skin starts to burn in about 10 minutes without protection and you use SPF 30, the theoretical protection time is roughly 10 × 30, or 300 minutes.

The result is also shown in hours so your outdoor time is easier to picture.

What you enter and what you get

Choose the unprotected burn time that matches your skin type and the SPF of your sunscreen. The output is your protection time in minutes and hours.

Lighter skin burns faster, so it gets a shorter protection time at the same SPF than darker skin does.

When it is useful

It helps you plan beach days, outdoor work, hikes and summer holidays. Knowing your estimated protection time lets you time when to move into the shade and when to reapply sunscreen.

It is especially handy for fair skin and in areas with strong sun.

Important warning

The result is a theoretical maximum under ideal conditions. In practice sunscreen wears off, rubs away and washes off.

Reapply at least every 2 hours and always after swimming or sweating, and never rely on the calculated time alone.
