This VO2max calculator estimates your maximal oxygen uptake from the Cooper 12-minute run test. You enter the distance you ran in metres and get an estimate of your endurance fitness in a widely used unit.

How the calculator works and what it’s for

How VO2max is calculated

In the Cooper test you run as far as you can in 12 minutes, and that distance reflects your endurance fitness. The calculator uses the Cooper formula VO2max = (distance − 504.9) / 44.73.

The result is given in ml/kg/min, which describes how much oxygen your body can use per kilogram of body weight each minute.

What you enter and what you get

Enter the distance you ran during the 12 minutes in metres. Measure it on as flat a surface as possible, such as a running track, so the result is comparable.

The result is your estimated VO2max value. The higher the number, the better your aerobic fitness.

Who the test suits

The Cooper test is a good fitness indicator for adults and a handy way to track progress in endurance training. You can repeat it every few weeks and compare results.

Only run it after a proper warm-up and only if your health allows a hard effort.

Good to know

The formula gives an estimate that is affected by pacing, weather and motivation on test day. A single result is not a precise laboratory measurement.

You get the most value by running the test the same way each time and following your progress over time.
