This blood pressure calculator works out mean arterial pressure (MAP) and pulse pressure from your systolic and diastolic readings. It gives you two useful figures at a glance that complement a standard blood pressure reading.

How the calculator works and what it’s for

How MAP and pulse pressure are calculated

Mean arterial pressure reflects the average pressure in your arteries across the whole heartbeat cycle. It is calculated as MAP = diastolic + (systolic − diastolic) / 3.

Pulse pressure is simply the difference between the systolic and diastolic values, and it describes how much the pressure swings during a beat.

What you enter and what you get

Enter the systolic (upper) and diastolic (lower) values in millimetres of mercury (mmHg). You get these from a normal blood pressure measurement.

The results show your mean arterial pressure and pulse pressure. Together they give a fuller picture than the reading pair alone.

How to read the numbers

Normal blood pressure is around 120/80, and a reading is considered elevated at 140/90 or above. A single measurement can vary with the situation and time of day.

The most reliable picture comes from repeated measurements taken at rest on different days.

Good to know

The calculator is for illustration and is not a substitute for medical advice. If your readings are repeatedly high or clearly abnormal, contact a health professional.

Measure in a calm setting, with your arm supported and after a few minutes of rest, so the result is reliable.
