How the calculator works and what it’s for▾
How cost per day is calculated
Cost per month is the purchase price divided by the months of use. From that, the cost per day and per use is derived from how often you use the item.
For example, a 600 € purchase used over two years costs 25 € a month. If you use it daily, the cost per use drops to a few dozen cents.
What you enter and what you get
You enter the purchase price, the estimated lifetime of use in months, and how many times you use the item per month.
You get the cost per month, the cost per day, and the cost per use, all describing the same purchase from different angles.
Where it helps
Cost per day helps compare purchases of durable goods such as tools, electronics, clothing, or hobby gear.
It is also useful when weighing a cheap option against a pricier but longer-lasting one: the more expensive product can end up cheaper per use.
Interpretation
The more often and longer you use an item, the cheaper the purchase becomes per single use.
Keep your figures realistic: an overestimated lifetime or usage frequency makes a purchase look cheaper than it truly is.
