The first Monday of September, since 1894
Labor Day honors the American labor movement and has been a federal holiday since 1894, when Congress passed the law days after the Pullman railroad strike. Uniquely among the Monday holidays, it was born a Monday — the first parade, in New York City in 1882, was already held on a Monday in early September, and the law simply codified the pattern: the first Monday of September, which falls between September 1 and 7.
Most of the world celebrates workers on May 1 (International Workers’ Day); the September date was chosen partly to distance the US holiday from the May date’s radical associations. The calculator above finds the correct Monday for whichever year is next.
Summer’s bookend and the fall reset
Labor Day is the mirror image of Memorial Day: the unofficial end of summer. Beach rentals flip to off-season rates the following week — often the best-value warm-weather travel of the year — while the weekend itself brings major sales on grills, patio furniture and summer clothing being cleared for fall. Most US school districts are back in session by Labor Day, and the old “no white after Labor Day” rule survives mostly as a joke about exactly this date.
Counting toward a date of your own instead? The days from today calculator adds any number of days to today, and the days between dates calculator measures the gap between any two dates — deadlines, anniversaries or trips.
