January 1 and the year that ends the night before
New Year’s Day is January 1 on the Gregorian calendar, the civil calendar used across the US since Britain and its colonies adopted it in 1752 (before that, the legal new year in the colonies began March 25). The famous countdown, though, belongs to December 31 — New Year’s Eve — when the Times Square ball drops at midnight.
