From Decoration Day to the last Monday of May
Memorial Day honors US service members who died in military service. It began after the Civil War as Decoration Day, observed on May 30 regardless of weekday. The Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1968 (effective 1971) moved it to the last Monday of May — one of four holidays shifted to Mondays specifically to create three-day weekends.
