When summer actually starts (three different answers)
Astronomical summer begins at the June solstice — the moment Earth’s North Pole tilts closest to the Sun and the Northern Hemisphere gets its longest day. In the US the solstice falls on June 20 or 21 in the current era (June 22 is possible but extremely rare); this countdown uses June 20 as a close, evergreen approximation, so the true solstice is at most a day away from the date shown.
Meteorologists use a different definition: meteorological summer runs June 1 through August 31, aligned to whole calendar months for clean temperature statistics. And for most American families the practical answer is a third one — summer starts when school lets out, typically late May to mid-June depending on the district.
Booking the season before it arrives
The best summer prices are bought in winter and spring: summer camps open registration in January–February and popular sessions fill by spring, beach-house peak weeks book four to six months ahead, and domestic summer flights are usually cheapest one to three months out.
