Why Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday
Thanksgiving is defined by rule, not by date: the fourth Thursday of November, which can land anywhere from November 22 to November 28. Lincoln’s 1863 proclamation set it as the last Thursday of November; in 1939 President Roosevelt moved it a week earlier to stretch the Depression-era shopping season, a controversial switch critics dubbed “Franksgiving.” Congress settled the dispute in 1941 by fixing it in law as the fourth Thursday.
The distinction matters in years when November has five Thursdays: “fourth” and “last” then give different dates. The calculator above applies the fourth-Thursday rule for whatever year comes next.
